I would like to stock my self-published book/zine/print in the shop, what do I do?
Great! All foundling archive members are welcome to sell their independantly created publications.
We accept self-published memoirs, zines, oral histories, photographic journals and catelogues, poetry, cards, limited edition prints- anything on paper that has been create independantly. We accept up to 10 copies of any one project/print at a time.
So, what's the deal with the gallery?
THE GOOD ROOM, celebrates critical thinking.
This is not just a gallery for the display of art - it is a gallery for the communication of ideas, presented as works in print, photography, installation or film.
What's the setup?
The gallery design allows for the exhibition of multiple perspectives alongside eachother. We want to encourage discussion and to maximise representation. We curate contributers according to loose thematic similarities, rather than style or media.
We have set up a basic structure to make exhibiting less daunting for contributers who have less experience than others.
Have a look at our application form for a listing of our available spaces. We are always very open to suggestions and ideas.
The gallery is set up to maximise audience comfort and therefore potential length of stay! The quick gallery wizz-around never really acheived anything. We want bums on comfy chairs, reading and watching and experiencing what exhibitors have to say.
Is there a selection process?
Yes. There are limited places available each year..However, if we believe that the content is great, but the standard of delivery needs work, we will provide feedback and where necessary, work with you or encourage a partnership that we believe will work. Remember, we require your work to respond to our mission.
Hey, why do you guys charge for exhibition space?
Great question! We wish we didn't have to. Government funding isn't what it was 5 or 10 years ago. While we do recieve grant funding for our projects, we simply can't rely on it to keep running. So we have set fees. These have been set at a lower rate than most access galleries, particularly with the membership discount. We have structured them so that they cover our costs- They go directly back into maintaining the gallery, the archive and towards subsidising programmes.
I want to use some images/footages/oral histories from the collection.
Lovely. Please send us an email, with a brief description of your project, intended use of material and when you might like to come in to view the collection. Please note; there may be a small cost associated. This goes directly bak into the maintainence of the collection.
But I'm not an artist?
Great. THE GOOD ROOM is about content. We want students, researchers, community groups, collectors, documentary film makers, audio documenters, authors, cartoonists, performers and anyone else who has made the effort to really think about issues that are important to Australian society to find a way to communicate them. Contact us to discuss your idea or research and we will figure out a way to communicate it!
We are a community group with an idea for a workshop/exhibition/event partnership. What do we do?
Please contact us!
You guys are great! How can I get involved?
Fantastic! There are a few ways to get involved.
3. Volunteer. Volunteers recieve a very special complimentary membership, entitling them to 25% in store, exhibiting and workshop discount as well as one free entry into one of our open exhibitions. Unlike other places, we will be utilising our pool of volunteers to fill any future employment oportunities.
4. Get on the committee! We are currently looking for interested people to join our committee. No experience necessary, but interest is vital. Special skills in history, cultural heritage, community liason, creativity and communications are very especially welcome.
5. Get on our mailing list.
Help! My question isn't here. What do I do?
Send us an email. As soon as we move into our building, we will also hook up a phone line. We promise.
